Insights into the challenges school leadership face over the next few months

In this online event chaired by Professor Dame Alison Peacock (Chief Executive, Chartered College of Teaching), we heard from Ian Bauckham CBE (CEO, Tenax Schools Trust; Chair, Ofqual; Chair, Oak National Academy; DfE advisor MFL, RSHE; Chair, ITT Market Review), who spoke on the leadership challenges the education sector faces currently. Following from this, we had a broader conversation with leaders from primary, special and secondary reflecting on their leadership experiences this term.

Those in attendance also had the opportunity to ask our speakers questions in a Q&A towards the end of the session.

About our speakers

Ian Bauckham CBE

Ian has worked in education since graduating from Cambridge University. He led a modern languages department and a sixth form before becoming headteacher of a large comprehensive in Kent. The school was graded outstanding and is a Teaching School and SCITT. Ian was president of ASCL 2013-14. He now leads a trust of 8 schools including a free school.

Ian chaired a review of Modern Languages in 2016 which led to the establishment of National Centre for Excellence in Languages Pedagogy at York University. He is the Department for Education advisor on RSHE and has led on the implementation of statutory RSHE in primary and secondary schools. He has been the Chair of Oak National Academy since it started in April 2020, and from January 2021 took over as chair of Ofqual. He is also chairing the DfE’s review of the ITT Market. He has been a trustee of NFER, and remains a trustee of Sabre Education which supports kindergarten education in Ghana. He was awarded the CBE in 2017 for services to education.

Michael Chiles FCCT

Michael Chiles is a Principal Examiner, Chartered College council member and an experienced school leader who has successfully headed departments in several challenging secondary schools in the UK. He is an experienced trainer and has delivered training, both nationally and internationally, to support teachers in their approaches to implementing effective assessment practices.

Michael is a Chartered Geographer at the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) and is an experienced Head of Geography. In recent years, Michael has supported schools in curriculum development, delivering training nationally and internationally to teachers and school leaders, along with authoring several revision materials for schools. He is a passionate practitioner with a keen interest in using research-based evidence to support students in becoming lifelong learners.

Michael is the author of ‘The CRAFT of Assessments’ and ‘The Feedback Pendulum’ , his books have received widespread acclaim and have been praised for containing a wealth of practical ideas with research-informed explanations.

Karen Giles FCCT

Karen Giles is embedding excellence in her seventeenth year of Headship at Barham , a titan (930 pupils, 150 staff) multi-lingual/cultural/faith primary school in Wembley.
She has been teaching and leading learning in urban primary schools for over three decades.
Karen is a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching. She is currently Chair of the Inspire Partnership Academy Trust Board.
Karen is an Advisor to the Varkey Foundation (VF) Board UK and Trustee for VF Argentina. This entails the Global Teacher Prize.

Mat Galvin FCCT

Mat trained to teach straight out of Uni in 1997 after reading for a degree in Chemistry in the University of Sheffield and still loving being in the classroom teaching Science. Over the years Mat has worked his way up the leadership structure to Vice Principal, with an Easter ’21 start as Head Teacher at Macclesfield Academy in Cheshire East. Through his career Mat has been privileged to work with and serve diverse communities in South Yorkshire and Cheshire and regards himself as a lifelong learner, taking any opportunity to work out how to do his role better!

Dr Penny Barratt FCCT

Dr. Penny Barratt is Chief Executive of The Bridge London Trust. The Trust presently has four schools, The Bridge School caters for students with autism and/or severe learning difficulties. It has a primary and secondary site catering for 205 pupils. The Integrated Learning Space caters for 26 pupils between the ages of 7 and 19 with autism and complex needs. The Satellite Provision is two resource bases for pupils with autism but who struggle to access mainstream provision. These two bases form one school. The Trust has also taken on a mainstream Primary School which was placed in special measures.

Penny has worked in the field of special education for over 30 years, both in the USA and in England. She has held a wide variety of roles working with children and young people of all ages, in both mainstream and specialist settings.
Penny has been involved with a number of working groups at the Department of Education, she sat on the leadership group of Challenge Partners, is a co-founder of Special Schools’ Voice, and a founding trustee and present council member of the Chartered College of Teaching. She sat on an advisory panel discussing the new assessment procedures and also sat on the Teaching Assistant Standards Panel.

Penny’s doctorate focused on school improvement and inclusion. She is particularly keen to promote research and innovation in schools and share practice across schools. Work currently being undertaken with the four schools in the Trust is to implement the European model of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support. This has been an immensely successful project.
