Vision of the classroom as unnatural and uncomfortable

This session will feature Prof Arnold Wilkins, University of Essex, and is titled – Vision of the classroom as unnatural and uncomfortable.

Our vision evolved in nature and operates inefficiently with scenes that are unnatural. Discomfort then results from the consequent metabolic load. Scenes from the classroom are unlike those in nature with respect to lighting, shape and colour. Classroom lighting often flickers rapidly, impairing reading and causing headaches. Text is unnatural, the more so when the shapes of letters are regular and closely spaced. Colour contrast is often greater than in nature. Prof Arnold Wilkins will explore ways in which the classroom can be made more natural and more comfortable.

This webinar comes from the Centre for Educational Neuroscience. This autumn, they have a fantastic lineup of speakers sharing their research each Thursday from 4–5pm.
