The last few years have seen a growing encouragement for teachers to use GenAI tools for “burdensome tasks” such as planning, assessment and administrative work. In this study, we engage with maintenance and repair theory to explore the often invisible labour undertaken by teachers when they use GenAI outputs in their teaching practice. In this session, we will present results from an interview study with Swedish upper/lower secondary school teachers that demonstrate the tools inherent limitations and highlight the pedagogical, social, and moral dimensions of teaching practice. We claim that these inexplicable and ungeneralizable aspects of teaching – grounded in teachers’ situated awareness, professional experience, and tacit knowledge – cannot be codified or reduced to training data.
Following the presentation of the research results, we will hear from a practitioner’s voice to hear what this looks like in our classrooms.
