An Introduction to Visual Discomfort

This talk is part of a webinar series from the Centre for Educational Neuroscience at UCL, Birkbeck University and the UCL IoE. You can register here to receive weekly updates about the seminar series.

In this talk ‘Visual Discomfort’ refers to the aversive responses reported by susceptible individuals when viewing specific visual stimuli such as text, stripes or spots. Perhaps the most important form of Visual Discomfort to educators is Visual Stress, a condition in which a page of text appears to be uncomfortable to view with susceptible individuals reporting to perceive motion, patterns or colours on the page. Headache may also accompany the visual symptoms. In Visual Stress, an intervention of coloured lenses or overlays can improve the appearance of text and increase reading rates by >15%. I will discuss our current understanding of Visual Stress & highlight how further work is needed to recognise perceptual differences within the classroom, specifically those at Key Stage one level.
