Chartered Teacher (Leadership) Status is a professional accreditation that provides formal recognition to highly accomplished practising school leaders (e.g. executive headteachers, headteachers, deputy headteachers, assistant headteachers, directors, and heads of school) who have either whole-school or cross-school responsibility and have attained an advanced standard of practice.  Chartered Teacher (Leadership) recognises evidence-informed, high-quality leadership practice, benefiting schools children and young people.

To work towards Chartered Teacher (Leadership) Status, you must first register as a candidate with the Chartered College of Teaching. You will get access to our online Chartered Teacher (Leadership) candidate community and detailed guidance and content to guide you through your Chartered journey.

If you are purchasing assessment units on behalf of others, you should check with them that they meet the eligibility criteria prior to purchasing. Vouchers are valid for 3 months from date of purchase.

Suitable for: school leaders (eligible practising classroom teachers and middle leaders should register for the Chartered Teacher pathway instead).

Registration Period:

Up to 3 years. Typically, we would suggest it should take around 1-2 years to complete all four required assessment units and submit your application for Chartered Teacher (Leadership) Status, however you have up to three years, if needed.

Eligibility:

By registering as a Chartered Status candidate, you will confirm that you meet the following eligibility criteria;

Be a practising school leader working with pupils up to 19 years of age, in a school in the UK or a British International School (see our Membership Handbook for further details).

Be eligible for and hold current full Membership (MCCT) or Fellowship (FCCT) of the Chartered College of Teaching, both whilst you are working towards Chartered Status and to retain your Chartered Status in future (see our Membership Handbook for further details).

At the point of final application and award, you will need to have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a practising school leader, with whole-school or cross-school leadership responsibility, where you have significant influence over the policy and practice of one or more schools (usually assistant/deputy headteachers, headteachers, heads of school, executive headteachers, and those working across schools e.g. within a school or trust).

Chartered Teacher (Leadership) Status aims to recognise the expertise of experienced leaders, it is not designed to prepare leaders for undertaking specific roles.

What does registration include?

You will gain access to our ‘Introductory course: Chartered Teacher (Leadership) Status’ unit, which aims to provide you with the key information and guidance you need, to help you prepare for and begin your journey towards achieving Chartered Teacher Status. You will also get support to start developing your Professional Learning Profile, a key assessment that you will work on throughout your journey and submit at the point you make your final application for Chartered Status. You’ll self-evaluate against the Chartered Teacher Professional Principles, then plan and reflect on the professional learning you undertake as you work towards Chartered Status.
