Introduction
I have been a teacher for over 22 years, taking an unconventional path to obtaining my teaching credentials. After university, I left the UK to explore the world, eventually pursuing my teaching qualifications in Hong Kong – a decision that supported my international career but which has hindered my professional progression upon returning to the UK.
Background and scope
This article examines my transition back to England after spending my entire professional career abroad, and my route to obtaining qualified teacher status (QTS). It explores the struggles and bureaucratic red tape that I faced and the considerable frustration of being rejected for roles that I was well qualified to undertake, with my international experience often becoming a source of hesitancy for potential employers.
