‘Adolescence’ and how to address misogyny and toxic masculinity in schools

The TV series ‘Adolescence’ has received a lot of attention on and offline since it first became available to watch. It tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who brutally murders a female classmate and explores important issues including adolescents’ social media use, misogyny and gender stereotypes.

Following announcements from the streaming service to make the series freely available to secondary schools, this webinar will feature a discussion of whether or not to watch the series with students in school and if so, how. It will also cover how the important topics of misogyny, social media use and toxic masculinity can be addressed in schools, with or without watching the series.

The event will be chaired by John Rees, PSHE expert and Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, and include the following panelists:

  • Dr Sophie King-Hill, Associate Professor, University of Birmingham
  • Dr Emily Setty, Associate Professor, University of Surrey
  • Dr Nicholas Taylor-Mullings, Vice Principal, John Roan School
  • Dilan Savjani, Personal Development Lead, Lionheart Educational Trust
