This talk will focus on how teachers can support students in progressing from being novice to expert learners, based on the research behind scaffolding and adaptive teaching. Using tried and tested methods and with evidence drawing on cognitive science, Alex will present effective scaffolding methods across different settings and disciplines which seek to support students’ improved literacy and oracy.
Alex is a former senior leader of teaching and learning, professional development, literacy and oracy, and a Trust teaching and learning lead. She has recently launched ‘Alex Fairlamb Consultancy’, specialising in these areas. Alex is also the co-author of What is History Teaching, Now? And The Scaffolding Effect.

Steve has a MSc and PhD in Climate Science and has taught geography in a number of secondary schools in North Bristol.
