Webinar: A vision for recovery – Sir Kevan Collins, Education Recovery Commissioner
Hear Sir Kevan Collins’ (Education Recovery Commissioner) vision for the years ahead as we begin to reconnect and rebuild following the pandemic.
Sir Kevan Collins has been appointed as the government’s Education Recovery Commissioner, to oversee a comprehensive programme of recovery. He is a prominent figure in education, having worked in the sector for over 30 years as a teacher, a Director of Children’s Services and most recently as Chief Executive of the Education Endowment Foundation.
Chairing the webinar, Professor Dame Alison Peacock (Chief Executive, Chartered College of Teaching) also spoke with colleagues from Ethical Leadership Pathfinder Schools who will share positive examples of work already underway in some of our schools and communities.

Lisa Fathers BA Hons/NPQH is Director of Teaching School & Partnerships at ‘The Alliance for Learning’ and part of the BFET Executive Team. The Teaching School lead school where Lisa is based is Altrincham Grammar School for Girls: the top performing school in the North West and part of the Bright Futures Educational Trust (BFET). BFET is committed to providing the best possible opportunities for the children, young people and families it serves. As well as working closely with the CEO & Director of Education on trust wide school improvement Lisa also has strategic responsibility for marketing and PR for BFET. Lisa is also an experienced leadership coach.

Cath is the CEO of The Skylark Partnership, a specialist trust for pupils with medical needs and the trust was a pathfinder for the Ethical Leadership Framework. She is the president of the National Association for Hospital Education and a National Leader of Education having been involved in the education of pupils with medical and mental health needs for over 20 years. She gave evidence at the All Parliamentary Committee investigation into Alternative Provision to raise the profile for pupils with medical needs and now sits on the DfE AP stakeholder group looking into reforms to AP. Cath was the lead in the Alternative Provision Innovation Fund project looking at how telepresence solutions can support transitions for pupils with medical needs which was awarded the TES Award in 2020 for the Best use of Technology.
David Atkinson MCCT
Headmaster, Dr Challoner’s Grammar School
David Atkinson has been Headmaster of Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, since 2016. The school is a selective state boys’ school with a co-educational Sixth Form, and is the only school David has worked at – he is now in his 25th year there. Culture and ethos is at the heart of his leadership, with a focus on developing individual aspiration, resilience and kindness in everyone involved in the school. He is also Chief Accounting Officer of the Astra SCITT and Teaching School Alliance, providing ITTInitial teacher training - the period of academic study and ... More and professional development across Buckinghamshire and beyond. Following an Outstanding judgement under Ofsted’s new framework in November 2019 David, and the whole school, are also excited to have been designated as the Teaching School Hub for Buckinghamshire from September 2021. David believes very strongly that it is possible to blend academic progress and effective all round personal development, and that one supports the other. As we move beyond Covid he is very much looking forward to getting out in the field with his Geography students (he is also Vice President of the Royal Geographical Society), taking the under 15 B team cricketers to fixtures and re-energising the co-curricular life of the whole school. He is also proud to be part of the CCT’s inaugural CTeach (leadership) cohort.
Mark Wilson
CEO, Wellspring Academy Trust
Mark Wilson was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Wellspring Academy Trust in 2014, shortly after its inception, having led primary schools in West Yorkshire and London. Wellspring is based in Barnsley and has 25 Academies across 6 Local Authority areas in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. The Trust will be welcoming three additional schools imminently, in addition to which it has been selected to operate three further Free Schools. It has developed 8 new academies in the last four years and has invested over £70m in improving its schools. Over half of the Trust’s Academies are Special or Alternative Provision.
Wellspring became a Pathfinder for the Ethical Leadership in Schools Framework, the objectives of which are totally in keeping with the Trust’s (and Mark’s) ethos and values. Said Mark; ‘Education is the vehicle for improved outcomes for all, aiding the cause of social justice. We in Wellspring are passionate about what we do, championing inclusive education, stronger communities and improving life chances’.
The Trust’s ‘Vison 2025’ sets out the strategy for its next era, building on its successes to date to support a community of sustainable, highly effective, inspiring schools, enhanced by a programme of charitable and community initiatives.
